Interactive Movie Recommendation Platform
About
Peliplat, a media tech start-up based in Vancouver, is looking to develop a web platform following a star map theme where Gen Z users (18-30 years old) can interact with these planets, contribute content, and form communities. The platform must have a user-friendly and interactive interface with 2.5D art elements, while incorporating the functionality of a virtual assistant chatbot.
Challenge
The company is looking to answer : How might we increase awareness and improve the UX/UI functionality of the Library function with an emphasis on interactive and fun, and that users will actually use the function?
To answer this problem, the team first conducted user research to identify pain points that users currently face when engaging with the platform. We've found the following pain points:
Endless scrolling from the filter menu. Users will exit the page before even getting to the result page.
Keywords aren’t dynamic.
There’s no easy way for users to search the movie genre. Users have to rely on the filter function that can take extra time to find the desirable result.
We also looked at user engagement and gamification ideas from existing platforms for inspirations (e.g Google Maps, Movie Map, 50 Years Swiss Music Charts).
Result
Built a functional prototype of an interactive movie recommendation tool with the following features:
A homepage with the universe galaxy view where users can switch around the clusters
Users can switch between the galaxy view or the "movie list" view.
Filtering system based on Peliplat's proprietary keywords filtering method
An AI chatbot that based on Meta's Llama model where the user can ask it to recommend movies.
